Established in Meiji 19 (1886) by the wealthy Yokohama businessman Sobei Motogi, this urban park has its roots in a plum garden. Covering approximately 44,000 square meters along the Ichigawa River, the vast garden boasts 469 plum trees of 60 different varieties, including specimens over 100 years old. The first plum blossoms typically open from late November to early December, making it widely known as "Japan's earliest blooming plum."

The Atami Plum Festival is held from early January to early March, coinciding with the sequential blooming of early, mid, and late-blooming plum trees. This festival marks the arrival of early spring in Atami and has gained considerable popularity, reaching its 80th anniversary in 2024.

Beyond plums, visitors can experience Japan's four seasons throughout the year, including cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, fireflies, and the famous late autumn leaves. The autumn foliage, in particular, is renowned as "Japan's latest autumn leaves." During the Atami Maple Festival held from mid-November to early December, the garden is illuminated, attracting numerous visitors.
