Japan’s oldest wooden restored castle built on top of a mountain high above the town.

The castle is located on Mt. Hachiman northeast of Hachiman Town, Gujo City. In 1559, the warlord Endo Morikazu built a fort which was the beginning of this castle.

The current castle was restored with wood in 1933 using Ogaki Castle as a model. This is the oldest wooden reconstructed castle standing in Japan today. The nature in four seasons and the white castle make a beautiful picture, which Ryotaro Shiba praises in his novel “Kaido wo yuku.”

Inside the 4-layer 5-floor wooden castle, many historical items are on exhibit. The top floor is an observatory over the castle town and Okumino mountain ranges. As a memento, Mino-Washi paper with stamps is given at the ticket window.

This is a famous place for fall foliage with the Maple Festival in November. Trees are illuminated at night and the castle is open into the night.
