As the home of the Shiwaku Suigun navy, Honjima island is the center of the Shiwaku Islands, which had enough power to be given autonomy by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590 and flourished in the shipping industry during the Edo period (1603-1868). In the Kasashima district on the northern side, the group of old buildings that keeps the prosperity of old times, and it has been selected as the only important groups of traditional buildings preservation district of the nation in Kagawa prefecture.

In this area where white-walled and Namako-walled houses and Dozo (storehouses) are lined up in narrow alleys, you can still see the techniques of "Shiwaku Daiku (Skilled carpenters who had worked based on Honjima)” who was famous as a master-hand at carpentry from the Edo through the Meiji eras, such as a the Senbongoshi and the Mushiko-mado. Currently, there are 13 houses built in the late Edo period and 20 houses built in the Meiji period (1868-1912), of which the Sanagi-tei built in the late Edo period is open to the public as the "Streetscape Preservation Center", in addition, the 3 houses including Maki-tei and Fujii-tei are open to the public.
