Shikoku Mura Village

This open-air museum features historic buildings relocated and restored primarily from the four prefectures of Shikoku. Spread across the expansive grounds of Shikoku Mura Village at the foot of Mt. Yashima in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, are 33 structures dating from the Edo period to the Taisho era, including homes, workshops, a rural kabuki stage, rice storehouses, and a soy sauce brewery. Visitors can stroll through the grounds while gaining insight into the lifestyles, industries, and local culture of the time. Many tools and household items once used in daily life are also displayed inside the buildings, conveying the knowledge, skills, beliefs, and everyday practices of the people who lived there.

Surrounded by nature that changes with the seasons, the grounds offer a relaxing setting among waterfalls, trees, and plants. Visitors can also view works of art at the Shikoku Mura Gallery, designed by architect Tadao Ando. The striking contrast between traditional homes and contemporary architecture is another highlight.

The site also includes a Sanuki udon restaurant housed in a relocated traditional home and a café inside a relocated Western-style residence from Kobe. With history, architecture, art, and culinary culture all in one place, the museum attracts many visitors.
