Kasaoka Shiritsu Manabe Junior High School

Junior High School with a two-story wooden building built in 1949, famous as a movie location.

School, tourism spot

Kasaoka City Manabe Junior High School is known as a location for the movie, MacArthur’s Children. From Manabe-shima island’s Honura Port, stroll through a narrow alley surrounded with homes, up a gentle slope to a plateau. You can look back at the idyllic scene of the Seto Inland Sea beyond clustered homes.

The 2-story wooden school was built in 1949. The classrooms have not been in use since 2020 due to aging, but the offices for the principal and teachers and the science lab are still used.

You are free to see the school from outside - the wooden walls and white plaster that have endured the ocean wind for many years, and the ridge roof that time has etched history on. The front door and the terrace are a bit more modern. From the rainy season into summer, hydrangea in the back yard will bloom, adding colors to the school.

If you wish to look inside, you can ask one of the teachers to get permission (depending on the students’ activities and Covid response). The wooden hallway stretches straight ahead from the front door. The caramel color of the wooden floor allows you to imagine the students who walked on it. The ocean view through the quaint upstair windows seems to warm your heart.

* Due to aging, the building use may be changed.
