Akita Kanto Festival

The Akita Kanto Festival is a national important intangible folk cultural property and Akita's traditional festival with a 270-year history, and is one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region. The festival is held for four days from August 3 to 6 every year, centered on Kanto Odori street in Akita City, and is divided into two parts: the daytime Kanto (from August 4 to 6) and the night main performance.

The Akita Kanto Festival is a festival to pray for a good harvest with "Kanto," which resembles an ear of rice, and each lantern hung from the pole resembles a rice bale, and is held up by strong "Sashite" performers. The largest "Owaka" is 12-meter tall with 46 lanterns, weighing a total of 50 kg!
The skill with which the lanterns are shifted to the palms of the hands, the forehead, the shoulders, and the hips with perfect balance is a must-see.

During the daytime in Kanto, there are the "Kanto Myogi Competitions," in which participants compete in individual and team competitions. This is a must-see event for anyone interested in appreciating the skills of these well-trained masters. The night performance with the lanterns lit is also stunning. The sight of approximately 280 Kanto being lifted in unison at the sound of a whistle is breathtaking. It is recommended to reserve a seat in advance if you want to fully enjoy the performance.
