Nagamachi Samurai District

This area still has residences of former Kaga Domain’s samurais. Cobblestone alleys with earthen walls will take you back to the Edo Period. Traditional craft shops and restaurants will make your walk pleasant.

The Onosho Canal, which supported the town’s life long ago, still runs to this day. When winter comes, “Komogake” drapes appear to protect the earthen walls from snow. The historical townscape with samurai culture and modern life are blended together to create it here in Nagamachi.

Some residences are open to the public. You get to see the lavish interior and gardens. Former Nomura Family’s residence belonged to the 11 generations of Nomuras who were the mounted guards’ captain and the magistrate. The garden fed with the water from Onosho Canal, landscape paintings, interior with carved woodwork are graceful. You can enjoy green tea and sweets at the tea ceremony room, overlooking the garden.

Kaga Domain’s warrior Takada Family’s former residence shows the restored Nagayamon Gate to the public. The grounds have an elegant circular garden to stroll around.
