Yamada Bessou

A charming villa built at the beginning of the Showa Era.

Last update :

Yamada Bessou is located in the center of Beppu City but in a quiet neighborhood and only an 8-minute walk from the Beppu Station or Beppu Kitahama bus stop. This hideaway ryokan was originally built in 1930 as a villa for businessmen and converted to a ryokan after the war. Since then, descendants for generations have been continuing the business.

The building is a blend of Japanese and Western architecture that was popular at the time. The pseudo-Western-style reception room, with its plaster ceiling decorations and lamps, is a symbolic space of the ryokan that reminds us of its history. The guest rooms, on the other hand, are pure Japanese style, built with a traditional Japanese aesthetics sense, as seen in their beautiful tokonoma (alcove) decorations. The ryokan is loved by local cultural figures, artists, and guests from Europe and other countries.

The hot spring water flows into its baths undiluted. There is an open-air bath with a rustic atmosphere and two indoor baths with nostalgic retro tiles. The open-air bath is available for private use by reservation, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the skin-softening waters.

While a rich and flavorful Japanese meal using seasonal ingredients from Oita is served for breakfast, the ryokan does not serve dinner, as they would like you to enjoy a delicious local restaurant.
