Last update :

Located in the central part of the Shimabara Peninsula, Unzen Fugendake is an active volcano. Although a significant eruption occurred in 1990, a declaration marking the end of volcanic activity was made about 20 years ago, and now it attracts many hikers and tourists throughout the year. The trekking route starting from the "Ikenohara Park" parking lot at the base is recommended for climbing. The 3-4 hour trek is popular and manageable even for beginner hikers.

The ropeway's starting station is near the "Nita Pass" parking lot. The view from the summit at 1,359 meters elevation is breathtakingly beautiful, offering a panoramic vista of the Ariake Sea, Amakusa Islands, and even as far as Kirishima. Visitors can also witness the imposing Heisei Shinzan, a mountain formed from solidified lava erupted during the recent activity. The seasonal floral landscapes, including Mitsuba azaleas in spring, Yamaboushi in summer, autumn foliage, and frost flowers in winter, are exceptionally beautiful.

For hiking, in addition to standard gear like hiking boots and rainwear, trekking poles can be helpful due to some challenging routes on the trail.
