Sabo Hishii

Enjoy the retro atmosphere of both the Japanese and Western styles in a storehouse that has been left behind in a place beloved by cultural figures.

Last update :

The "Sabo Hishii" is a storehouse built and reconstructed as a pawnshop in 1905, and used as it is. The black plaster exterior walls that remained after passing through the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934 are a distinctive feature of the building. Many poets, waka poets, and literary giants loved this place, which was also the home of Setsuko, wife of Takuboku Ishikawa, who once lived in Hakodate.

On the left side of the entrance is a teahouse, and the first floor has a Western-style antique setup with a counter and four box seats. In contrast, the loft floor, with its beautifully arranged Japanese antiques, has a sturdy atmosphere with exposed beams from the original storehouse. It is a pleasure to be able to choose your seat according to your mood.

The menu consists mainly of coffee, tea and fruit juice. In addition, there are sandwiches and toasts as light meal plates for meals, and sweets such as anmitsu and parfaits.
