“Hasesuto,” a local convenience store chain known as the birthplace of Hakodate’s famous Yakitori Bento.

Founded in 1958, this local convenience store chain operates 13 locations in and around Hakodate. Stocked with a wide variety of bento meals, drinks, and baked goods, it has long been loved by locals under the nickname “Hasesuto.”

Among its offerings, the undisputed star since its debut in 1978 is the Yakitori Bento-a dish of rice topped with a layer of nori and skewers of “yakitori.” Despite the name, Hakodate’s version uses pork instead of chicken. As the meat cooks, it’s sprayed with red wine to tenderize it and give the flavor a mellow depth-just one of the many unique touches that set it apart.

Everything is cooked to order, never pre-made, ensuring every bento is served hot and fresh. Customers can choose from five seasonings-tare (sweet soy), salt, salted sauce, spicy umakara, and miso-as well as customize the number and combination of skewers and the amount of rice.

This Bay Area location also has an eat-in space, making it easy to enjoy your freshly made bento right on the spot.
