Kashiya Yokocho
A nostalgic lane lined with traditional candy shops along a cobblestone path.
Located just off Takazawa Street, this narrow, 80-meter long cobblestone alley is a popular tourist spot in Kawagoe. Both sides of the alley are lined with quaint candy shops, creating an atmosphere that has earned it a spot in the Ministry of the Environment's "Top 100 Fragrant Landscapes."
Candy production here began in the early Meiji era. After the Great Kanto Earthquake devastated Tokyo's stores, production and supply increased significantly. By the early Showa period, about 70 candy stores lined the street. Today, around 30 shops still operate, keeping the street lively.
Each shop offers traditional sweets like senbei (rice crackers), fu (wheat gluten) confections, hard candies, and dango (dumplings). The simple, old-fashioned treats are nostalgic for adults and a fresh experience for children. Candy stores displaying an array of snacks are a delight to explore. The lively calls of vendors and friendly interactions with shopkeepers add to the charm, enchanting even first-time visitors.
