Tsunoshima Lighthouse

Located at the northwestern tip of Tsunoshima Island, this Western-style lighthouse overlooks the Sea of Japan. It first lit up in March 1876 as a mainstay lighthouse on the Sea of Japan coast and remains operational today. Designed by British engineer R.H. Brunton, the lighthouse stands about 30 meters tall and showcases the beautiful texture of granite. Up to a height of 24 meters, neatly stacked rough granite blocks are used, while the upper section features decorative cut stones. In 2020, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Tsunoshima Lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses in Japan that’s open for visitors to climb. Make your way up the 117 steps of spiral stairs and ladders, you reach the landing platform, offering a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the vast Sea of Japan.

Every year from late January to mid-February, the area around the lighthouse becomes a sea of blooming daffodils that create the perfect backdrop against the lighthouse. There are also special light-up events during this period, making the lighthouse look like a scene of fantasy against the night sky.
