Aoya Kamijichi Historic Park

This spot lets you experience the appeal of the Aoya Kamijichi Archaeological Site, discovered during the construction of the Sanin Expressway, and is made up of three main areas.

The first area, the “Guidance Facility,” mainly features exhibits of materials showing what a Yayoi-period settlement looked like Approx. 2,400 years ago. Along with iron axes used for crafts and tools used for fishing and farming, it also introduces reconstructed faces of Yayoi people based on DNA analysis, making it a fun place to learn about the knowledge of the time. Workshops and Yayoi hands-on experiences, with advance reservations given priority, are also popular, with a wide range of programs that even children can easily join, including “Magatama Making,” “Kudatama Bracelet Making,” and “Fire-Making Experience.”

The second area, the “Important Cultural Properties Building,” displays important cultural properties actually excavated from the site. From the over 1,300 items unearthed, especially valuable pieces have been carefully selected, including a wooden pedestal cup decorated with a flower petal-like pattern and a finely ornamented deer-antler comb, allowing visitors to see the advanced craftsmanship of the Yayoi people.

The third is the “Park Area.” Inside the grounds stands a raised-floor storehouse, a symbol of the park, and the area has drawn attention for its unique concept of recreating the terrain and plants of the Yayoi period. Stop by the wetland zone, home to fish and insects, and enjoy a peaceful moment while feeling the breath of ancient times.
