Miyazu Toro Nagashi Fireworks Festival

One of Japan’s three major toro nagashi events, the lantern floating in Miyazu Bay began Approx. 400 years ago. The beauty of the memorial lights set adrift on the sea gained a reputation, and before long, many spectators came to visit.

This traditional event, held every year on August 16, takes place of course in Miyazu Bay. Around dusk, Approx. 10,000 lanterns carrying quiet prayers are released one after another. The countless lights swaying on the water look as if glittering stars have been reflected onto the sea.

As the night deepens, colorful fireworks are launched as if surrounding the “Shoryobune” spirit boat, and a grand star mine display lights up the sea. The contrast between the soft glow of the lanterns and the powerful brilliance of the fireworks quietly conveys thoughts of ancestors and prayers for peace, gently wrapping visitors in a sense of calm.

More than just a tourist event, this is a chance to experience the history and भावना of shoryo-okuri, a traditional Japanese rite of sending off ancestral spirits, and to feel a deep sense of emotion rarely found in everyday life.
