Impressive Displays Mikoshi Carrying!

Kanda Matsuri is a religious festival held once every two years. This historic festival, called one of the “Three Great Edo Festivals” and the “Three Great Japanese Festivals,” has been held for over 400 years. The festival lasts for 7 days, but the most people come to see the “shinkousai” and “mikoshi miyairi,” held on Saturday and Sunday, during which you can see impressive displays of mikoshi carrying.

During this event, the mikoshi (portable shrine) is carried for a distance of around 30 kilometers, through the Kanda, Nihonbashi, Oote, Marunouchi, and Akihabara areas in the heart of Tokyo. Thousands of people participate, including 108 city council members. The mikoshi, housing the deities of Kanda Shrine, travels around town, purifying where it goes.

Mikoshi Miyairi

The mikoshi miyairi is Kanda Matsuri’s most popular event. Over 200 mikoshi, big and small, parade through the streets from morning until evening. The mikoshi are lifted high up when signaling shouts are given, unifying those who are carrying it.

Plenty of food stalls are also set up for the festival, so be sure to eat your fill!

Additionally, Kanda Shrine is located in the heart of the business district, so an overwhelming number of businesses come to worship there as well.
This shrine is indispensable for business fortune in the city center.
Kanda Shrine’s charms that were made in collaboration with the popular manga “Kochikame” are also extremely popular!
