This 125m (410 ft) landmark tower was built in 1986 to commemorate Chiba’s population exceeding 5 million. To counter the swing, a 15-ton dynamic vibration absorber was placed on the top floor, which was the first attempt in Japan.

Except for the observation floor, the whole walls of the tower are covered with more than 5,000 half mirrors that reflect away heat waves. These walls reflect sceneries and the movement of the sun and clouds, showing interesting pictures at different times and days.

The observation floor gives a panoramic view over Tokyo Bay or of Mt. Fuji on clear days. The lights on factories are beautiful at night and it was selected as Lover’s Sanctuary in 2011 and as Japan Nightscape Heritage in 2012. It is a popular spot for dating.

During the Christmas season, a huge lighted tree is depicted on all the tower walls, which was recorded in the Guinness Book as the world’s biggest Christmas tree. It is Chiba’s winter tradition to this day.

Highlights

  • A dynamic vibration absorber counters the swinging energy. The tower is designed to withstand the wind velocity of 60m (66 yards) and magnitude 7.
  • There is a 15 - 20 min guided tour of the facilities at the port and the Tower. Reservation required before the 10th day of the prior month when you want to see.
  • Christmas tree illumination is for about one month between late November and December 25.
  • In the morning of New Year’s Day, the Tower is open at sunrise for a special event.
