Chichibu Yomatsuri, Night Festival
A gorgeous winter dream festival that heats up as many as 24 million spectators.
Chichibu Yomatsuri is counted as one of Japan's three great float festivals and Gion Festival in Kyoto and the Takayama Festival in Hida. With its economic growth, the Silk Market "Kinu-no Takamachi" held in the middle of the Edo period (1716-1829) at Chichibu Shrine developed into the grand Chichibu Yomatsuri Night Festival. Since then, it has become known as one of the most popular festivals in Japan.
The main attraction of the festival is the pulling of gorgeously decorated floats. The two kasaboko floats and four yatai floats each have their unique design. You cannot miss the breathtaking scenery of the 20-ton kasaboko and yatai being puled up the steep slope called Dango-zaka (Dango Slope) amidst a profusion of winter fireworks in the night sky! The rhythms of the bold yatai-bayashi music and the shouts of the musicians add to the powerful atmosphere. Every year, about 6,000 fireworks are set off over two days. As a gorgeous winter dream festival, it attracts as many as 240 thousand spectators.
What makes the festival even more exciting is the 1,000 + food stands. You will have a chance to taste Chichibu specialties such as yakitori, miso potatoes, and more. The Chichibu Yomatsuri Night Festival has been attracting even more attention since it was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. We recommend you to experience this fantastic festival that represents Japan at least once.
