Shinkyogoku Shopping Street

Spanning approximately 500m from Sanjo Street to Shijo Street in the heart of Kyoto, Shinkyogoku Street buzzes daily with locals, tourists, and school trip students. The Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2022, stands as Japan's second oldest shopping district.

Shielded by an arcade, the shopping street allows for comfortable shopping even during rainy weather, with a diverse array of stores including fashion boutiques, souvenir shops, and cinemas lining the street. The gourmet scene blends revered establishments with trendy spots perfect for snack walks, showcasing Kyoto's respect for tradition while embracing the new.

The genesis of Shinkyogoku Street dates back to the Meiji era, with the development of new streets through the temple grounds along Teramachi Street. Today, the street still hosts one shrine and seven temples within the shopping district, making the collection of temple stamps from these eight religious sites a popular activity.
