Opened in March 2023 in Kyoto’s Shijo-Karasuma area, Rokujuan is a traditional Japanese-style cafe created by restoring the Kubo Family Residence, a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. In a calm setting shaped by Taisho-era lattice windows, shoji screens, and a garden, you can enjoy warabi mochi and duck rice porridge.

The signature menu item, “Hana Warabi,” features clear warabi mochi decorated with edible flowers and is as beautiful as a work of art. The smooth, slippery texture of the mochi and the delicate texture of the petals make each bite enjoyable, and when eaten with homemade kuromitsu syrup and domestically produced kinako soybean flour, an elegant sweetness spreads across your mouth.

Another specialty at Rokujuan is “Kamo Gayu,” duck rice porridge made with Kishu duck delivered directly from farmers. It is a luxurious dish generously topped with duck loin and rare cuts of duck meat. Kamo Gayu can be ordered from the 8:00 am opening time, making it a great breakfast option. At dinner time, an omakase course is also available with sashimi, grilled dishes, sukiyaki, sushi, and more.
