The Shoyeido Kyoto main store is located at the south side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace in the sukiya-style building. The store was renovated in July 2018 at the same time as opening "Kunjyukan," a center for Japanese fragrance culture.

The company was founded more than 300 years ago. They sell incense for religious use, and aromatic wood and kneaded incense for the tea ceremony, as well as incense sticks and other forms of incense for daily use, scent sachets, and more.

They are always trying to incorporate the latest technology into their incense production while keeping traditional techniques. Most of the raw materials are natural fragrances, such as agarwood, sandalwood, and cinnamon, which are produced in China, India, and Southeast Asia. They are sometimes called Chinese medicinal scents. Currently, Shoyeido is also developing new scents to suit modern lifestyles.

There are three types for direct lighting incense: stick, cone, and coiled. They also offer scent sachets, bookmark incense, insect repellant, and other types of incense so that you can choose according to your needs and lifestyle. Seasonal products are also available, so you can find a new scent each time you visit. The store also carries a variety of incense burners and other tools for enjoying the fragrance world.

The Kyoto main store and the Osaka Honmachi store have service for creating your own scent sachets at the shop. You can choose your favorite fragrance from three different scents as well as a tiny purse made with plain or patterned fabric. Why not try making a scent sachet for yourself?

I visited the store on the advice of a tour guide. It was a great experience. The store has many different scents available as well as a nice assortment of accessories. The staff member who took care of us was wonderful and helped me make good choices about gifts for friends as well as a few treats for myself. I wish I could compliment the staff member directly but she would not give me her name. She seemed to be embarrassed to be singled out. Highly recommend.
