A historic shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the deity of learning. It is said to be a place where Michizane enjoyed poetry and music with Ariwara no Narihira and others, and that the shrine began when he enshrined a wooden statue he carved himself here after being exiled to Dazaifu.

At the center of the grounds lies Hachijogaike Pond, built in 1638, known for its beautiful scenery with shimmering water stretching out on both sides of the central embankment along the approach. From the drum bridge and Suijo Bridge over the pond to the stone-paved approach, every view here is full of picturesque charm.

In spring, the Kirishima azaleas that color the shrine grounds reach their best season, turning the approach a vivid crimson. Because the shrubs grow to Approx. 2.5 meters tall, the approach becomes a tunnel of deep red blooms, and its beauty has earned it designation as a Natural Monument of Nagaokakyo City.

The main sanctuary and Noritosha Hall were relocated from the former shrine buildings of Heian Jingu and are historic structures designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Kyoto Prefecture. With its solemn atmosphere and abundant nature in harmony, the grounds are soothing even for a quiet stroll. It is a wonderful place to visit not only to pray for academic success but also to enjoy seasonal flowers.
