Ashiya Fireworks Festival

A traditional fireworks festival that brings Fukuoka’s summer to life.

Last update :

A traditional event dating back to the Taisho era, this annual fireworks festival is one of the seasonal highlights that color summer in Fukuoka. Its biggest feature is the fireworks launched from a barge floating on the Onga River, which flows into the Hibikinada Sea. The fantastical view of large fireworks brilliantly lighting up the night sky and reflecting on the water is truly moving.

One of its biggest draws is the powerful spectacle of Approx. 5,000 fireworks, including rapid-fire sequences, lighting up the night sky one after another. In particular, the Approx. 250-meter-long “Niagara Falls” display stretching between both banks of the Onga River is a festival favorite, and the sight of golden light cascading onto the water is simply breathtaking. The colorful fireworks launched in quick succession and the “underwater fireworks” that spread in semicircles toward the river and sea are also not to be missed.

Food stalls line the area around the venue, adding to the lively atmosphere of a classic summer festival. Long loved by locals and visitors alike, this fireworks festival draws families, couples, and many other travelers. Come enjoy a summer night in Fukuoka.
