Ocha to Uji no Machi Historical Park Chazuna
A facility with a museum where you can learn about Uji tea and hands-on Uji tea experiences.
Ocha to Uji no Machi Historical Park Chazuna is an interactive facility where visitors can see, learn about, and taste the appeal of Uji tea.
At the museum, digital exhibits make it fun to learn about the history, types, and production methods of Uji tea, as well as Uji’s history and culture.
One of the most popular programs is the “Chazuna Museum + Matcha-Making Experience with a Tea Mill,” where you grind tencha yourself with a stone mill, make matcha, and taste it. This special Uji experience lets you whisk freshly ground matcha yourself and enjoy it. With support from a Japanese tea instructor, you can experience the full process of whisking and tasting tea—an Uji-only program that brings together “grinding, whisking, and drinking.”
The tea fields and Uji scenery spreading outside the windows are also part of the appeal, and advance reservations are required with a museum ticket included.
The park also features Tonimaru Chazuna Main Store, a restaurant operated by a Kyoto candy workshop. You can enjoy soft serve and drinks made with its signature hiyashiame, as well as a fried chicken set meal that uses hiyashiame as a secret ingredient. With spacious lawns, historic sites connected to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and tea-picking experiences from mid-April to mid-May, this is a great spot to enjoy Uji’s history and tea culture.
