Kishu Umeboshi-kan
See, make, and taste your way through Kishu’s ume culture.
This interactive facility offers insight into Nanko ume, a renowned specialty of Kishu. At the on-site factory, visitors can observe up close every step in the production of umeboshi made with Nanko ume.
Each stage reflects a commitment to quality, from thoroughly washing the ume delivered by local farmers and marinating them for about one week to allow the flavors to soak in, to rigorous quality control involving composition analysis and bacterial testing. Because Nanko ume have soft, delicate flesh, the artisans do not rely solely on machines but handle each ume with care—another highlight of the tour.
The hands-on workshops, available with reservations made by the previous day, are also popular. Programs include making umeshu by blending liquor and sugar to create three different flavors, making umeboshi with your preferred level of saltiness, and making ume juice with carefully selected large Nanko ume. These fun, beginner-friendly activities let you create a lasting memento of your trip.
After enjoying the tour and workshops, stop by the factory store. Its main attraction is the extensive tasting area, where you can sample and compare a wide variety of umeboshi to find your favorite. The store also carries a large selection of ume-related souvenirs, including sweets, processed foods, umeshu, and gift sets.
