Last update :

This private art museum was opened in Ueno Park in 1972. It does not have a permanent exhibition, but holds special exhibitions and public entry exhibitions along with artwork from oversea museums and important cultural properties on a regular basis. In 1994, VOCA Exhibition started sharing new work by young artists 40 and younger. The Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prise Exhibition, Japan’s Nature Painting Exhibition and various other themes are often announced for public entry in the efforts to find and nurture modern artists.

It held the first exhibition of comics in a museum “Inoue Takehiko: the LAST Manga exhibition,” the biggest Vermeer’s exhibition in Japan with nine of his works, “Vermeer and Dutch Art,” and other creative special exhibitions, which put the museum in a spotlight.

Besides the main hall, the annex has the Ueno Royal Museum Gallery on the 1st floor for a small special exhibition and the Ueno Royal Museum Art School on the 3rd floor to expand their activities outside exhibitions.
