Poppies in the Sky
Bright red poppies and the plateau that matches the bright blue sky.
About 15 million poppies bloom in the sky on a 5 hectare plateau at an altitude of 500 meters. The ideal time to see them is from late May to early June. The contrast between the blue of the sky and the red of the poppies is spectacular. The poppies are of the Shirley poppy variety, a member of the poppy family, and are also known as "hinageshi" (Japanese name) and "Gubijinso" (nickname). The poppies come in a variety of colors, mainly red, but also pink and white. The flower has the words "anticipation of love" and "gratitude".
The poppies are planted on a slope, so even if there are a lot of people, you can take pictures from an angle that doesn't include people. It’s sure to be photogenic on social media!
A poppy festival is held from mid-May to early June, and visitors can enjoy Chichibu's specialty, like miso potatoes and grilled rice balls. Pets are allowed. This is a spot where you can relax and enjoy the scenery.
