Terasaka Tanada(Rice Terrace)

One of the largest rice terraces in Saitama Prefecture with many of Japan's rural landscapes.

Nature / Scenery

This is one of the largest terraced rice fields in Saitama Prefecture that offers a unique Japanese rural landscape. The total area is about 5.2 hectares, of which about 4 hectares are rice fields.

With Mt.Buko in the background, the rice paddies spread out on a gentle slope. The scenery of satoyama can be seen throughout the four seasons, from rice planting in early summer to golden ears of rice and vermilion higanbana flowers in early autumn. In the summer, the "Firefly Bonfire Festival" is held, where about 600 bonfires are lit, creating a magical space for one night only that cannot be experienced in an urban city. In autumn, the Terasaka Tanada Higanbana Festival is held to coincide with the blooming of about 2 million bright red higanbana flowers. The number of tourists visiting this site is increasing every year.

In order to maintain these terraced rice fields, local farmers established the "Terasaka Tanada School" in 2002 where students can have rice farming experience. Today, residents from urban areas in and outside Saitama Prefecture participate as students, and they can experience rice cultivation throughout the year, from plowing in April to rice planting, weeding, and harvesting until the harvest festival in November.
