The Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival takes place along the Yodogawa, a symbolic presence of the "Water Metropolis Osaka" that flows through the center of Osaka City. It's a handmade event planned and operated by local volunteer staff, financed by donations from companies and organizations around the Jūsō area, where the festival takes place.
Starting in 1989 as the "Heisei Yodogawa Fireworks Festival", it was renamed to its current name in 2006. After two consecutive cancellations in 2020 and 2021, the festival made a comeback in 2022.
With a wide variety of highlights, including a wide starmine spanning the full 500m width, underwater fireworks that color the river surface, and collaborations of music and fireworks that sync rhythmically, it's no wonder that the event attracts about 450,000 spectators every year. Paid sponsor seats and free general viewing seats are set up on the Jūsō side of the Yodogawa riverbank. The sight of numerous fireworks being launched against the backdrop of high-rise buildings towering over the Umeda area is a unique and spectacular view of the city center. On the other hand, please note that the Umeda side of the riverbank is completely off-limits.
