Mt. Takao is located only about 50 minutes away from Shinjuku by train, close enough for a day trip of leisurely hiking on the mountain. The Japanese have regarded it as a holy mountain since the Edo period. The mountain today is well loved as a splendid nature destination close to the city.
In the Tama area, the townscape in front of the station has a theme-park atmosphere and a huge variety of fun things to do. The area is rich in greenery, with spacious parks and traditional Japanese landscapes.
Chofu is home to many locations deeply connected to manga artist Shigeru Mizuki’s best-known work, GeGeGe no Kitaro. Japanese sensibility and natural beauty is lush through the areas surrounding Jindaiji Temple, an area brimming with spots to visit such as souvenir shops and teahouses.
