After a planning period of Approx. 40 years, it opened in February 2022. It houses a collection of Approx. 6,600 works, combining donated and purchased pieces, focusing on representative art and design works from Japan and abroad from the late 19th century to the present, with attention to the rich artistic activities that unfolded in Osaka.

Exhibitions are mainly made up of special exhibitions, introducing works selected from the museum’s collection, and it also holds special exhibitions in collaboration with museums in Japan and abroad. The collection ranges widely, including works and materials of modern art such as those by Yuzo Saeki, a Western-style painter from Osaka, as well as works and materials of modern and contemporary design.

Inside, the museum has an airy, open feel, with a large atrium running through all floors. It also features the museum shop “dot to dot today” and the cafe restaurant “Musée KARATO.” On the second-floor lawn plaza, you can see a huge three-dimensional artwork by Osaka-born contemporary artist Kenji Yanobe. The lawn plaza is open to everyone, free to enter, no admission required.
