Masuen Bunsuke

Located slightly away from the Shirakawa-go gassho-zukuri village, near the scenic viewpoint, Masuen Bunsuke is a river fish restaurant where you can savor iwana, amago, and rainbow trout, all swimming in a tank fed by natural spring water, prepared in various cooking styles. You can dine in a tranquil atmosphere, overlooking the garden that surrounds the gassho-zukuri structure.

The fish, lifted from the tank only after your order, are exceptionally fresh. Popular among even those who usually don’t prefer river fish, the grilled and fried dishes are prepared so that you can eat them whole, without any fishy smell. The Masuen set meal, which lets you fully enjoy the charm of fresh river fish with dishes like grilled rainbow trout, sashimi, sweet simmered fish, and small fried fish, comes highly recommended. For an additional 220 yen, you can substitute the grilled rainbow trout with iwana or amago. The 'Iwana no Kotsuzake' – hot sake with a whole iwana fish – is a unique delicacy that enthusiasts love.
