Yanaka Matsunoya specializes in aramono—simple, durable household goods designed to enhance daily life. Founded originally as a bag manufacturer and wholesaler in Tokyo’s Bakurocho district in 1945, Matsunoya expanded its business to become a wholesaler of everyday household goods. In 2010, they opened a retail shop for the public atop Yanaka’s famous Yuyake Dandan stairs.

With a philosophy of "craftsmanship that doesn't burden artisans," owner Hiroshi Matsuno carefully selects items from across Japan and abroad. Alongside original products, the store showcases a variety of humble, practical tools made by craftsmen from rural communities and small-town workshops.

Affordable and easy to use, the store’s aramono goods—such as handmade brooms and dusters, galvanized rice containers, and woven shopping baskets—have become indispensable tools in many homes, seamlessly blending into everyday life.

Additionally, Hiroshi’s wife, Kinuko Matsuno, occasionally hosts workshops teaching participants how to craft traditional dusters. In today’s era of sustainable living, these nostalgic, practical household goods continue to grow in popularity.
