Making udon noodles at Yasuragi no Ie

Saitama Prefecture is the second largest producer of udon noodles in Japan. An old townhouse in Tokigawa offers you a chance to experience this handmaking activity and its age-old traditional techniques.

A townhouse built over 100 years ago has been turned into this Yasuragi no Ie, or Peaceful House. This facility is now utilized as an agricultural experience that introduces visitors to the local special food culture. Here, not only residents but foreign visitors can also get involved with this udon making activity.

All instructors are actual residents of Tokigawa! In the olden days, women in Tokigawa were told that they couldn’t marry until mastering udon noodle making. Their technique was considered as a necessary virtue to become a good wife. These women now teach first time visitors their long-learned technique so that anyone can make delicious udon on their own.
