Sankichiya Honten

A local hot spot in Niigata serving up light and tasty shoyu ramen.

Last update :

Niigata is home to 5 varieties of locally acclaimed “Niigata Top 5 Ramen”, a category which includes the shoyu variety beloved for its light flavor. This particular variety is best enjoyed at local ramen spot, Sankichiya Honten, a veteran shop founded in 1957.

Each bowl features a match made in heaven, with thin, wavy noodles and a clear broth made with pork bones, dried sardines, vegetables, and soy sauce. It’s then topped with chashu pork, green onions, seasoned bamboo shoots and “naruto” (fish cake). While it may look simple at a glance, but the taste is profound. This age-old, classic dish is cherished by the locals of Niigata City both young and old.

It’s also worth noting that Sankichiya has 3 different branches, all owned by one of three brothers. At the main flagship branch you’ll find counter seating as well as tables large enough for five to eat. Please note that tables are shared by different parties.
