Tonkatsu Masa-chan Niigata Station

Just steps from Niigata Station! A famous spot for Niigata’s signature “tarekatsudon”.

This is a particularly hot spot that serves Niigata’s one-of-a-kind “tarekatsudon”. The standard Japanese katsudon is usually pork cutlets served over rice after being simmered in seasoned broth and egg or smothered in sauce. But in Niigata, the extra special tarekatsudon is thin pork cutlets dripping in a sweet and savory soy-sauce-based sauce and served on a bed of rice. When in Niigata, the locals know that ordering katsudon means you’re bound for this mouthwatering variety.

In addition to tonkatsu, the menu also includes a number of selections, including curry rice, western-style dishes and full-course meals.
You especially won’t want to miss out on the “Niigata unmemon zanmai” set. The set includes a full smorgasbord of Niigata delicacies to enjoy, including a tarekatsudon, “noppe” (a stew of local vegetables with a rich, velvety texture from “satoimo” taro), seasonal side dishes, bottomless miso soup made with “echigo miso” (a high-end, local miso made from Niigata brand rice), Japanese pickles, and “sasadango” (a sweet dumpling that hails from Niigata) flavored ice cream for dessert.

Tonkatsu Masa-chan has several locations in the city, but this particular one has the best access from Niigata Station and spacious aisles between tables that provide travelers with room for even large baggage.
