It was a private theater completed in March 1911 as Japan's first Western-style theater, led by businessmen and business leaders who were leading the country at the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Known by the nickname "Teigeki", it is also known as the first theater in Japan to show productions titled "musicals". It was rebuilt once in 1966, and has retained its graceful appearance ever since. Visitors can enjoy spectacular shows that incorporate the latest stage mechanisms throughout.
In addition to popular productions such as "Les Miserables", a musical that premiered in 1987 and continues to be shown repeatedly today, the theater also actively stages new productions. In addition to theater, there are many other mechanisms to immerse oneself in an extraordinary atmosphere, such as the lobby decorated with stained glass and electric light decorations by Genichiro Inokuma, an artist active in the Showa period. The on-site Souvenir Shop also sells original products that make great souvenirs, such as ballpoint pens and chocolates made by Bic.
