Asakusa Samba Carnival competition

The whole town goes excited by the rhythm of the samba! It's Japan's largest samba event to close out the summer in Asakusa.

The "Asakusa Samba Carnival Parade Competition," where the entire city hypes up by the rhythm of samba. It is the largest samba event in Japan, held last Saturday in August. More than 5,000 people from all over Japan participate in this contest-style parade every year, competing for the first prize with their ingenious Allegoria (festival float) and costumes and choreography that resemble those of the real Rio, making it a significant event to end the summer season.

The parade will be held on the 800-meter public road from Asakusa Station to Kaminarimon-Dori on Umamichi-Dori. Dancers in colorful and gorgeous costumes perform passionate dances to the lively samba rhythm.

The highlight of the Asakusa Samba Carnival is the performance of each team. The serious dance performances by the dance teams from all over Japan are nothing short of spectacular. According to the results, the participating teams are divided into groups, and the top league, S1 League, is changed every year. Hence, the seriousness of the competition is one of the highlights of the festival!

As the festival entered its midpoint, many talented teams emerged as contenders for the championship. Their overwhelming performances attract more than 500,000 spectators. The rhythmic dance moves make even the audience happy, and some audience members will even start to dance along the street!
