Last update :

Founded in 1962, this Age-Manju (deep-fried-manju) store can be found along Nakamise, an avenue leading from Kaminarimon Gate to Sensoji Temple. The hot, freshly fried, and wide variety of flavors of Age-Manju makes it ideal for eating around. This store is always displaying and selling its products, and there is always a long line of customers waiting to purchase.

The most popular standard Age-Manju is characterized by the moderate sweetness of Koshi-An (sweet red bean paste) made from Japanese azuki beans. The manju is crispy fried in a blend of three kinds of high-grade oil, giving it an excellent crisp outside and a soft and chewy texture inside, and you will be eating it in just a few seconds. There are 13 flavors in total. Most of them are sweet, such as green tea and chestnut, but there is also a "Monja" flavor, which is fried with Aonori dried seaweed and red pickled ginger and flavored with sauce, and a "Curry" flavor with ground beef & pork, which is good for a light meal as well.

It is popular to purchase souvenirs in packages with illustrations of Sensoji Temple. These products last a long time, and a variety of varieties are available, such as the standard six-pack or a mix of five kinds of 10 pieces. If you would like to eat them right away, it is recommended that you purchase freshly fried to-go.
