Suntory Museum of Art

In 1961, then president of Suntory, Keizo Saji, opened the Suntory Museum of Art in Marunouchi. It was moved into the Suntory Building in Akasaka in 1975, then in 2007, the architect Kengo Kuma redesigned it and moved to the current “Tokyo Midtown.” Using a generous amount of Japanese materials such as wood and Japanese paper, it was turned into a relaxing modern Japanese space with natural warmth. On the 3rd floor, there is a museum shop and cafe produced by Kagafu Fumuroya. On the 6th floor, the Genchoan tea room from the former Suntory Museum was transferred. During exhibitions, some days are appointed for serving green tea. Forget the hustle and bustle of city life and have some rest here.

Since its opening, ”Art in Life” has been the basis of the museum. Nearly 3,000 items including national treasures and important cultural properties are curated. Traditional Japanese art such as paintings, ceramics and lacquerware as well as western and Japanese glasses - there is no permanent exhibition but they choose themes and put together each exhibition.
