The observation room, located on the 45th floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building's Main Building No. 1, offers a panoramic view of Tokyo from 202 meters above ground. With around 2 million visitors each year, it's a hot spot for foreign tourists. The "Memory Piano" made its debut in 2019 when the South Observation Room was renovated. The piano was installed with the hope that visitors from all over the world could deepen their interactions through music and create lasting memories.

Honorary Tokyo citizen and artist Yayoi Kusama supervised the design of the grand piano, which was donated by Tokyo citizens. The piano has been decorated in a way that's sure to delight even those who are just looking. The bold visual, featuring black polka dots on a yellow base, is uniquely Kusama.

The piano can be used for a total of four hours per day, from 10 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm, on the days the South Observation Room is open. Each person can freely perform for up to 5 minutes. On weekends, many people wish to play, and there is often a continuous line of people waiting their turn. Reservations for performances are not accepted, and playing other instruments or singing is not allowed. Remember to follow the rules and enjoy your performance!
